What you'll learn.

  • What emotional intelligence is, the four domains it covers, and the common misconceptions about it
  • How to tell thoughts from feelings, name emotions precisely, and recognise your own triggers
  • How to widen the gap between a trigger and your response, and why reappraisal works better than suppression
  • The five things that reliably make people feel threatened at work, and how defensiveness really shows up
  • How to read colleagues more accurately, and check your reading out loud rather than jump to conclusions

Who it's for.

Anyone who works with other people and wants fewer misunderstandings, calmer reactions under pressure and a more accurate sense of what's going on with colleagues. No prior training is needed.

About 72 minutes, across 4 short modules. Go at your own pace and pick up where you left off.

How does it work?

Each module ends with a short quiz. Pass them all to complete the track.

Do I earn a badge?

Yes. You earn a badge when you complete the track, and it shows on your Academy profile.

Is emotional intelligence just about being nice?

No. It's about being accurate, not agreeable. Sometimes the emotionally intelligent thing to do is say something unwelcome, clearly, because avoiding it would cause more damage later.

Isn't emotional intelligence something you either have or you don't?

No. The course treats it as a set of behaviours you can describe, practise and get better at, rather than a personality type.

Is it based on evidence?

Yes, and it's careful about it. The course is clear about what the research supports, and sets aside popular claims that don't hold up, such as the idea that emotional intelligence matters more than general intelligence.

Are there related courses?

Yes. It's one of three standalone tracks on working well with colleagues, alongside Effective Communication at Work and Giving and Receiving Guidance at Work. Each can be taken on its own, in any order.
